CHIMACUM — Chimacum roared back from a huge first-half deficit and nipped Forks in overtime 42-36.
Chimacum fell behind 16-4 in the first quarter and entered the fourth quarter still down 29-21 but outscored the Spartans 21-7 in the fourth quarter and overtime.
“I truly couldn’t be more proud of the girls tonight in how gutsy their performance was,” said Cowboys coach Trevor Huntingford.
“We seemed to get all the looks we wanted in the first and second quarter, but our shots were off and we looked over-excited. We did a poor job on the boards early and Forks did a good job of taking advantage of that,” Huntingford said.
Huntingford said the Cowboys went into a press with about four minutes left. He said he was reluctant to use the high-energy defense because the team only had six players and one “emergency sub” and his starting center Chloe Patterson was in the locker room throwing up before the game began.
“I really wasn’t sure if we could sustain but we had to get some stops and we got them as every girls dug deep and made plays,” Huntingford said.
In overtime, the Cowboys continued pressing, resulting in turnovers. The girls also did a good job of making free throws down the stretch, he said.
“I just couldn’t ask more of the efforts of the kids tonight in the second half defensively,” Huntingford said.
Forks coach John DeMatties agreed that turnovers hurt his team late, as well as rebounding.
“You gotta fight back and hopefully learn from it,” DeMatties said.
Mechelle Nisbet led the Cowboys with 24 points, while Forks was led by Rian Peters’ 15 and Skyler DeMatties’ 12 points.
The Forks girls (0-3) have been close in all three of their losses and have been a whisker away from being 3-0. Their three losses are by a total of only 11 points.
Chimacum (1-1) next plays at North Mason Monday, while Forks hosts Lake Quinault at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Quilcene 51, Mary Knight 22
QUILCENE — Quilcene got off to a 26-7 halftime lead over Mary Knight, then cruised in the second half for a 51-22 win.
”Defensively, we knew we were going to have to stay on top of sophomore guard Katie Sowte. This kid is tough and is tenacious on her dribble drive attack. She can also shoot the long 3 as well. Abby Weller completed her assignment beautifully and kept Katie in check,” said coach Brianna Weller.
”The level of hustle and intensity from the team was incredible. Gina Brown, Sydney Brown, Allison Jones, Abby Weller, and Madi Coffey on defense were ‘lights out’,” she said.
Allison Jones scored 21 points for the Rangers, and Abby Weller chipped in 10.
“Offensively, the girls worked on making some adjustments coming off their loss to Port Townsend. They executed tonight and did a great job of running the sets. We had great ball movement and player rotation,” Brianna Weller said.
Quilcene (1-1) travels to Joyce to play the Crescent Loggers at 5 p.m. Tuesday.

Boys basketball Forks 63, Chimacum 29
CHIMACUM — The Forks basketball boys got off to a fast start and cruised to a 63-29 win over Chimacum.
Parker Browning had a huge game for Forks, leading the Spartans with 28 points.
“Our defense really ramped it up,” said Forks coach Rich Gooding.
“It was awesome. Every one of our kids bought it. They weren’t worried about personal numbers,” Gooding said.
“Everybody did something, that’s a pretty good recipe for success,” Gooding said. He said the team shot over 50 percent from the field for the game.
Forks got off to a 19-5 lead in the first quarter and 32-12 at the half.
Chimacum was led by Devyn Winkley, who scored 13 points.
Forks (3-0) will host Lake Quinault on Tuesday. Chimacum (0-2) plays at North Mason Monday.

AMANDA PARK — Crescent got 19 points each from Eric Emery and K.C. Spencer in a season-opening 78-44 win over Lake Quinault.
McCabe Story added 10 points and Wyatt McNeese 13 for the Loggers.
“It was a good start. We figured out how to put the ball in the hole,” said Coach Chris Ferrier. Spencer, who played much of the football season with a cast on his arm, didn’t seem to have any ill effects from his football injury.
“He tore it [the cast] off and threw it aside” during practice, Ferrier said.
Crescent (1-0) next plays Tuesday, hosting Quilcene.
