PREP BASEBALL: Sequim strong in season-opening win over Forks

Eight Wolves batters record 13 runs on 12 hits, eight walks, four stolen bases

SEQUIM — Lincoln Bear and Hunter Tennell combined on a three-hit, 10-strikeout performance and the Sequim bats were active at the plate in a 13-3 season-opening win over Forks in five innings Monday.

Bear started the game and earned the win, allowing no runs on two hits while striking out seven with no walks. Tennell came on and allowed three runs, two earned, in two innings, but struck out three in some frigid early season weather.

“I was especially impressed with our pitchers’ ability to throw strikes given the weather conditions,” coach Dave Ditlefsen said. “We had strong winds and cold temperatures throughout the game and Lincoln Bear and Hunter Tennell were able to keep the ball in the strike zone. Their pitchers had a tougher time and we had a lot of walks to go with some timely hits.”

Bear also received some early assistance as the Wolves pushed four runs across in the home half of the first against Forks starter Aidan Salazar on an Ethan Staples sacrifice fly, a two-run error and a Bryant LaBoy RBI single.

Bear also helped himself out at the plate with two hits, two runs a stolen base and an RBI. He was one of eight Sequim batters to record a hit in the game.

The Wolves also were patient at the plate, drawing eight walks, and were aggressive on the basepaths with four stolen bases.

Leadoff hitter Zeke Schamedeke was 3-for-3 with a double, a walk, two stolen bases and two RBIs to pace the Wolves.

Solomon Shepperd also added two hits and scored two runs from the No. 8 spot in the batting order for the Wolves.

Landin Davis was one of the lone bright spots for the Spartans (0-1) with a triple, a double, a run and an RBI. Freshman Bubba Hernandez had the other base hit for the Spartans.

Forks is scheduled to visit Quilcene on Tuesday.

Sequim was scheduled to visit Bainbridge late Tuesday.
