BELLINGHAM — The Port Angeles baseball boys got spectacular perfomances from their pitching staff in a doubleheader, giving up just eight hits and one earned run in 11 innings, splitting a pair of nonleague games to Burlington-Edison and 3A Squalicum.
The Roughriders beat Squalicum 6-1, and lost in a pitchers’ duel to a very good Burlington-Edison sqaud 1-0.
Against Squalicum, Hayden Woods had his second straight spectacular start, going three innings, giving up two hits and striking out four. In his past two games, Woods has given up five hits, no runs and struck out 13 in eight innings pitched.
Ethan Flodstrom was 1 for 2 with a walk, run scored and an RBI. Colton McGuffey and Bo Bradow were each 1 for 2 with an RBI, while Jake Felton had a hit and an RBI. Carson Jackson and Daniel Basden each had a hit and a run scored.
Burlington-Edison is a 14-3 team, so there is no shame in losing to one of the better 2A teams in the state. A trio of Rider pitchers gave up just four hits, one walk and one earned run, but five Burlington-Edison pitchers combined to hold the Riders to just two hits. Jackson and Flodstrom managed the only base knocks for the Riders.
In fact, Jackson did everything he could to manufacture a run for the Riders. He got on base three times total after being hit by a pitch and reaching on an error, and he stole four bases. But, Port Angeles couldn’t get the big hit to knock him in.
Flodstrom started the game, going three innings, and giving up one hit and no runs. Timmy Adams went 2.2 innings, giving up two hits and one run and taking a hard-luck loss. Woods pitched the final one-third of an inning, giving up a hit and no runs.
Port Angeles (7-1, 11-3), returns to league play with a crucial game on the road against North Kitsap (6-1, 8-3) on Tuesday with undisputed first place in the Olympic League 2A Division on the line. This is the first time the Riders and Vikings will have played this year.

Girls softball North Kitsap 5, Sequim 3
POULSBO — The Sequim softball team came within a whisker of being all alone in second place in the Olympic League 2A Division, losing a heartbreaker, giving up four runs with two outs in the bottom of the sixth to get nipped by North Kitsap 5-3.
A win Friday would have put the Wolves ahead of the second-place Vikings. Now, Sequim sits in third place, essentially tied with Olympic.
Sequim took a 2-1 lead in the third on consecutive hits by Isabelle Dennis, Jayla Julmist and Bobbi Sparks, then tacked on another run in the top of the sixth with a leadoff hit by Jessie Dominguez, followed by consecutive hits by Kiana Robideau and Dennis.
In the sixth, the Vikings got the bases loaded with two outs. A base hit, followed by an errant throw scored three runs, then another base hit gave the Vikings a 5-3 lead. North Kitsap was able to shut down the Wolves in the seventh to preserve the win.
Dennis finished the game going 3 for 4, while Sparks, Julmist and Dominguez each had two hits.
Sequim (4-3, 4-8) plays Klahowya at home at 4:15 p.m. Monday in a nonleague game, then returns to league play against Olympic (3-2, 6-3) at home at 4:15 p.m. Tuesday.
