VANCOUVER — The Port Angeles baseball team gave W.F. West all it could handle with a five-run third inning, but it wasn’t enough as the Roughriders lost their state 2A baseball tournament opener 8-7 to the Warriors.

The Riders finish their season 19-7 as they couldn’t get out of the single-elimination stage of the state tournament.

Jordan Shumway had a monster game, going 2-for-3 with a run scored, three RBIs and a walk. He had a clutch two-run single in the five-run third.

W.F. West, ranked No. 7 at state, got up 4-1 after the first inning, but the Riders fought back to take a 7-4 lead. W.F. West scored three in the fourth to tie it and one in the fifth to take the lead. Port Angeles was unable to push across a run in the final four innings.

Ezra Townsend and Colton Romero each hit doubles, while Kaleb Mullen had an RBI on a sacrifice fly.

Nate Basden had a hit, two runs scored, an RBI and a walk.

On the mound, Romero went 3â…“ innings, allowing five hits and six earned runs while striking out six. Brayden Martin pitched 2â…” innings, allowing two hits, no earned runs and striking out four.

It was the final game for seniors Romero, Brian Guttormsen, Townsend, Aiden Swenson and Mullen. Starters Alex Angevine, Shumway, Basden, Luke Flodstrom, Tate Alton, Joshiah Gooding and Rylan Politika are back next year.

W.F. West went on to lose to Columbia River 6-3 in the state quarterfinals. North Kitsap was beaten 8-4 by Lynden in another quarterfinal. The semifinal teams that will play in Bellingham next weekend are Lynden vs. Columbia River and Anacortes vs. Enumclaw.
