PREP BASEBALL: Port Angeles’ Brody Merritt named Olympic 2A MVP

PORT ANGELES — Port Angeles’ fireballing pitcher Brody Merritt is the Class 2A Olympic League baseball MVP.

Merritt held an 8-0 record on the season entering Saturday’s state contest against Sehome.

The Riders lost that game 3-2, Merritt’s first and only loss of the year. He finished the season allowing just six earned runs in 45 innings (an ERA of 1.20) and 54 strikeouts.

Three other Roughriders and one Sequim player joined Merritt as first-team all-league honorees.

Junior Ethan Flodstrom, last season’s All-Peninsula Baseball MVP pick, was tabbed as an outfielder, along with classmate Lucas Jarnagin, also a junior outfielder.

Junior second baseman Milo Whitman rounded out the Port Angeles first-team picks.

Sequim senior pitcher/catcher/infielder Johnnie Young was picked to the first team as a utility player.

Young’s Wolves’ teammates Michael Grubb, a sophomore second baseman, and junior outfielder Silas Thomas were second-team selections.

Port Angeles seniors Hayden Woods, Jadon Seibel and Seth Scofield, all pitchers, were picked to the second team along with junior outfielder Tyler Bowen and sophomore third baseman Wyatt Hall.

“They are a true pitching staff, [a] pretty special group getting to work with Coach [Jim] Clem and Coach [Casey] Dietz,” Riders head coach Karl Myers said.

Entering Saturday’s state game, the Port Angeles staff as a whole had a line of 19 wins, 5 losses, a 2.09 ERA with 159 strikeouts and 71 walks in 159 innings.

Voting was conducted by league coaches.
