PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles baseball team picked up a No. 4 seed in the bi-district tournament and will host a first-round playoff game against No. 5 Fife late this afternoon.
The game will begin at 4 p.m. at either Civic Field or Volunteer Field, depending on the weather. Because of the all-weather playing surface at Volunteer, the Roughriders prefer to play at Volunteer if the weather is potentially wet. The forecast is sunny, which means Civic Field is most likely, but the game could have some interesting fly balls as the forecast also calls for gusts up to 25 mph.
Port Angeles finished tied with North Kitsap for the Olympic League championship. North Kitsap won a rubber game to claim the league championship and top seed out of the league. With the Riders’ solid overall won-loss record of 17-5 and high ratings percentage index of No. 8 in the state, they got a high seed and at least one home game in the tournament.
Fife is a solid team, finishing second in the South Puget Sound League with a 12-4 league record and overall record of 14-7. Fife’s RPI is No. 13 in the state. SPSL champion Enumclaw (18-1) is ranked No. 1 in the state and is the No. 1 seed in the bi-district tournament.
Port Angeles automatically qualifies for the state 2A tournament with a victory and moves on to a second game win or lose. If the Riders win, they are in the tournament semifinals that will be played Saturday at Central Kitsap High School against the winner of Enumclaw and Olympic.
If they lose, the Riders get to host another game in the consolation bracket Wednesday against the winner of Sequim/Tyee. Port Angeles would have to win two straight in the consolation bracket to qualify for state.
Sequim also made the postseason tournament. The Wolves had an up-and-down season. They had a four-game winning streak early in the season followed by a six-game winning streak, but also had three three-game losing streaks, including one to end the season.
The Wolves finished 6-9 in league and 10-11 overall. They are the No. 5 seed out of the Olympic League and the No. 13 seed in the tournament. They will play on the road Tuesday at No. 12 Tyee (7-5, 12-5), which finished fourth in the KingCo League.
Unlike the Riders, the Wolves must win today to stay alive in the tournament. They have to win three straight to qualify for state. Win and they play the loser of Fife/Port Angeles at 4 p.m. Wednesday either in Fife or Port Angeles.
Soccer
The Sequim boys soccer team also qualified for bi-district. The Wolves are a No. 15 seed and play at No. 10 seed Sammamish tonight. Sequim (6-8-0) is the No. 3 seed out of the Olympic League. Sammamish (6-6-4) finished third in the KingCo League. That game begins at 7 p.m.
