SEATTLE — East Jefferson got an absolute gem of a pitching performance from Brody Moore as the Rivals won their first baseball game of the year Friday 5-1 over Seattle Christian.
The Rivals nearly pulled off a doubleheader sweep getting off to an early lead in the second game of the twinbill, but gave up four runs in the fourth inning in a 6-4 loss to Seattle Christian.
Moore went the distance in the victory, going five innings and allowing three hits and one run. Twelve of the 15 outs induced by Moore were strikeouts.
At the plate Sawyer Ziel had a huge game, going 3-for-3 with two runs scoed and a stolen base. Cash Holmes and Aaron Glanz each had a hit and an RBI, while Rylan Dunn and Moore each had a hit and a run scored.
In the second game, the Rivals got off to a 3-0 start in the first inning and still had a 3-2 lead entering the fourth.
Dunn pitched an inning, allowing a hit and an earned run while striking out one. Rhian Popp pitched three innings, giving up three hits and two earned runs while striking out three. Sean Jones piched an inning and struck out one.
At the plate, the Rivals could only manage two hits. Ziel finished a perfect day by going 1-for-1. Glanz had a hit and a run scored while Holmes and Jones each had an RBI.

BREMERTON — The Sequim baseball team scored nine runs in the first inning as Ethan Staples had a monster game for the Wolves.
Staples hit a home run and pitched five innings for the victory, allowing just two earned runs and striking out seven. Hunter Tennell pitched 1â…” innings, allowing 2 hits and an earned run while striking out one. Bryant Laboy got the final out on a strikeout.
Ayden Holland went 2-for-3 at the plate with an RBI, while Brayden White went 1-for-3 with a run, two RBIs and a stolen base.
Zeke Schmadeke had a hit, two runs scored and an RBI, while Lincoln Bear had a hit, two runs scored and two RBIs.
Sequim played East Jefferson on Saturday.

PORT ANGELES — There might not be any crying in baseball, but there can be the rare tie, especially when there are ferry schedules involved.
A nonleague game Friday night between Port Angeles and Lake Washington was called after eight innings and the score knotted up 4-4.
Alex Angevine remained hot at the plate for the Roughriders, going 3-for-4 with two doubles, three RBIs and a run scored. He hit an RBI double in the bottom of the seventh inning to tie the game at 4-4 and send it to extra innings.
The Riders had a couple of chances to pull out a win. In the bottom of the eighth, Elijah Flodstrom hit a double and moved to third on a balk. He was thrown out attempting to steal home. Ezra Townsend was walked, moved to second on a balk and stole third base, representing the winning run with one out. However, he was left stranded there as Josiah Gooding struck out and Tanner Jacobsen grounded out, so a tie was called.
Flodstrom finished with an RBI, while Kole Acker and Blake Sohlberg each had a hit and a run scored.
On the mound, Rylan Politika went three innings, giving up two hits and an earned run while collecting one strikeout. Kaleb Mullen went three innings, allowing six hits and two earned runs while striking out one. Brian Guttormsen and Jacobsen each pitched scoreless innings.
