PORT ANGELES — Dwayne Roberts feels 14 years old every time he gets behind the controller of a slot car.

But at 41, Roberts raced to a world championship in the sports car class GT 12 at World Flat Track Slot Car Nationals in Puyallup on June 29.

“It was my biggest win,” Roberts said. “It was some of the fiercest competition in the world.”

Slot cars are replicas of race cars that speed around various tracks, holding to their lanes by magnets and plastic “guide flags” that set into a groove, or slot, on a track.

The majority of slot cars are scaled to 1/32 or 1/24 the size of vehicles ranging from stock cars to monster trucks that can reach speeds of 120 mph or more.
