PORT ANGELES — The Lefties got an outstanding pitching performance from the duo of Dwayne Angebrandt and Frankie Scalzo and a clutch two-run double from Sequim’s Evan Hurn to beat Bellingham 2-1 in a getaway game Sunday afternoon at Civic Field.
The win puts the Lefties’ record at 4-2 in the season.
Angebrandt went seven full innings, picking up the win while giving up just three hits and one earned run with five strikeouts and one walk. Scalzo earned a save, going the final two innings, giving up no hits, no walks and striking out two.
Hurn drove in both Lefties’ runs in the sixth inning. Ethan Groff got on base with a walk and Damiano Palmegiani got on base with a single. Hurn then hit a two-run double to score both runners.
That was all the runs the Lefties would need as Angebrandt and Scalzo shut down the Bellingham offense the rest of the game.
A quintet of Bells’ pitchers allowed just five Lefties’ hits as the pitchers were in control for both teams. Groff went 1 for 2 with two walks and a run scored and Palmegiani went 2 for 4 with a run.
Saturday’s game
On Saturday evening, Lefties starting pitcher Tyler Tan continued his early season dominance by throwing seven innings of three-hit ball against Bellingham in an 8-2 Lefties win.
Tan gave up just one run against the Bells. Tan, who held the Cuban 23U national team scoreless over five innings last weekend in Victoria, B.C., was in control from the get-go, stranding a runner on third base with one out in the second inning and got a key double play ball off the bat of Mason Marenco in the third inning.
Tan received all the help he would need from the offense in the second inning, as Trevor Rosenberg capped off a string of three straight singles to drive in a run, giving Port Angeles a 1–0 lead. Two Bellingham miscues later in the frame helped extend the lead to 3–0.
The Lefties’ Damiano Palmegiani and Connor Denning each hit RBI singles in the third to make it a 5–0 game and chase Bells starter Gabriel Hughes.
The offense tacked on more in the fifth inning. Denning singled in another run before Charlie Nasuti and Trevor Rosenberg plated runs with groundouts.
Tan was one pitch away from completing seven scoreless innings, but Bellingham’s Logan Stevens spoiled the shutout with an RBI single to make it 8–1.
The Bells plated a meaningless run in the ninth as Jake Terao doubled and scored on Nick Sokol’s single.
Denning finished 4 for 4 to lead the Lefties offense, which finished with 12 hits, all singles.
