PORT ANGELES LEFTIES: Port Angeles bats on fire in win over Gumberoos

PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles Lefties pounded out 14 hits and gave up just six hits in an 8-4 win over the Seattle Gumberoos at Civic Field.

It was a nonleague game as the Gumberoos are a member of the Pacific International League, another wooden bat baseball league in the Pacific Northwest.

The Gumberoos were up 4-3 after 5½ innings, but the Lefties rallied with three runs in the sixth and two more in the eighth. Meanwhile, Seth Wrightstone (Vanguard) pitched two scoreless innings, striking out three batters. Jake Cumming (Fernley, Nev.) finished up by pitching a scoreless ninth inning.

Several Lefties had big days at the plate, led by Taylor Kirk (Fordham), who went 3-for-4 with four runs scored and an RBI. Chanz Doughty (Stony Brook) was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs, while Will White (Cal State Bakersfield) was 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI.

Garrett Cooper of Bremerton had a hit and two RBIs, while Sam Matosich (Centralia College) was 2-for-4 with an RBI and a stolen base. Levi Joyce (Edmonds CC) was 1-for-3 with a run scored and two stolen bases.

The Lefties used a total of six pitchers. Cade Stuart, who pitched the sixth inning and allowed one run, was the winner. Garrett Holpuch was the opener and pitched two scoreless innings. John Vaara (Port Angeles High School and Edmonds CC) pitched two innings, allowing no hits and one earned run.

The Lefties played the Gumberoos (A mythical Pacific Northwest creature, for those wondering) on Wednesday with the result after press deadline and wrap up their series at 6:35 p.m. today at Civic Field. They travel to Wenatchee for a series against the Apple Sox beginning Friday.
