PORT ANGELES LEFTIES: Lefties swept on the road by Kelowna; return to Civic Field tonight

KELOWNA, B.C. — The Port Angeles Lefties got decent pitching at times against the Kelowna Falcons, but their offense never got going as they ended up getting swept after a 5-1 loss in Kelowna on Sunday night.

Port Angeles was only able to manage three runs over the three-game series and got solid pitching in two of the three losses. On Sunday, they had three hits.

The Lefties’ staff pitched well enough to win, allowing only eight hits and four walks. CJ Lewis (Jackson State) in particular kept the Lefties in the game in the late innings, going 2⅔ innings and allowing no runs, two hits and one walk. He struck out two.

Starter Brock Mayer (Chaffey College) took the loss. He pitched four scoreless innings, but got touched up in the fifth. He ended up allowing four hits and three earned runs. He walked two and struck out four. Kole Acker (Port Angeles High School and Mount Hood CC) went 1â…“ innings, allowing two hits and two earned runs. He walked two and struck out one.

At the plate, Roberto Nunez (Embry-Riddle) had two of the Lefties’ three hits, going 2-for-4. Ethan Young (Lafayette College) had a solo home run in the third inning, his third of the year.

The Lefties (4-11 second half, 12-30 overall) had Monday off. They return to Port Angeles for a 6:35 p.m. game today against the Edmonton Riverhawks (5-10, 12-30) at Civic Field.

Note: Nunez raised his batting average to .362 (55-for-152), the fourth-highest in the West Coast League. He is also second in the WCL in hits, one behind the league leader.
