PORT ANGELES LEFTIES: Lefties’ rally against Dudes comes up short

PORT ANGELES — The Lefties had the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth inning as they tried to rally from a 3-1 deficit, but couldn’t push across a game-tying run in a 3-2 nonleague loss to the Redmond Dudes.

Both teams squandered chances. Redmond had 12 hits and the Lefties 11. For the second straight game, Lefties pitchers had double-digits in strikeouts with 10.

Andrew Rettew started and took the loss, going four innings, allowing four hits, three earned runs and two walks. He struck out six. He would have been unscathed but for one bad pitch in the fourth inning that went for a three-run home run by the Dudes’ Hunter Konine.

Newcomer Devon Daniels (Saint Mary’s) had a great game in his Lefties debut. He went four innings in relief, gave up five hits, no runs and no walks. He struck out four. Trey Maeker gave up three hits in the top of the ninth inning, but got a 4-6-3 double play behind him to end Redmond’s threat without allowing any runs.

In the bottom of the ninth, the Lefties rallied. Riley Parker began the inning with a leadoff single and Ethan Flodstrom drew a one-out walk. Lucas Jarnagin, a member of the Port Angeles Roughriders and Wilder Senior Baseball Club, got into the nonleague game and had a two-out single, scoring Parker from second base.

Devon Alvarez walked to load the bases and move Flodstrom and Jarnagin into scoring position. The Lefties then had who they wanted up at bat in Adam Paganelli, who is batting .380 in West Coast League play, but he flied out to center field to end the threat and the game.

Mason Persons finished 2-for-4 and Derek Bogh was 1-for-2 with an RBI and sacrifice fly.

The Lefties played Wednesday after press deadline, then wrap up their series with Redmond at 6:35 p.m. today at Civic Field. They return to West Coast League play at 6:35 p.m. Friday against the Yakima Valley Pippins.
