PORT ANGELES LEFTIES: Lefties fall in pitchers’ duel

KAMLOOPS, B.C. — The Port Angeles Lefties got outstanding pitching from starter Cade Stuart against the NorthPaws, as he allowed just five hits, but the Lefties’ bats were also stymied in the pitchers’ duel as they lost 2-1 in their final road series of the year.

The Lefties only had one hit going into the ninth inning and finished with just three hits for the game. Yet, they had a chance to win.

Stuart (Fresno Pacific) went seven innings, allowed five hits and two earned runs, both in the first inning. He walked two and struck out four. Josh Verkuilen (Cal State San Bernardino) pitched the eighth, allowing no baserunners and striking out one.

The Lefties couldn’t muster much offense until the ninth, but they did have an opportunity to pull the game out late.

With two outs, Eddie Alfaro (Riverside CC) walked and Jeremy Gieseigh (Cal State San Bernardino) hit a single.

Jack Edmunds (Brown), the Lefties’ best hitter in the second half, followed with a single to drive in Alfaro for his 30th RBI. Garrett Patterson (Chaffey) walked to load the bases, with the go-ahead run on second, but Kamloops was able to end the game by getting Dom Dominguez (Cal State San Bernardino) to fly out to right field.

Tommy Markey (Fordham) had the Lefties’ other hit. Markey goes into the final two games with a .299 batting average while Edmunds is hitting an even .300.

The Lefties played Kamloops on Tuesday night after press deadline. They complete their season at 6:30 p.m. today.
