PORT ANGELES LEFTIES: Lefties drop tight pitchers’ duel in Kelowna

KELOWNA — The Port Angeles Lefties got outstanding pitching from Garrett Holpuch and Wes Peninger and a home run from Chanz Doughty, but it wasn’t enough in a 3-2 pitchers’ duel loss against Kelowna on Friday.

Starter Holpuch (Centralia College) went five innings, allowing only three hits and one earned run. He struck out seven and walked two. Peninger (Utah Valley) pitched the final three innings, allowing two hits and three walks while striking out two. He allowed no runs. Kailen Kimata (Pierce College) was the hard-luck loser, pitching to two batters in the sixth inning, allowing a double. That runner came in on an error.

At the plate, Doughty (Edmonds Community College) belted his home run in the fourth. The Lefties scored another run in the fifth when Kyle Becker got on base with a single and came in to score on a balk and an error.

The Lefties were able to get runners on base in the seventh, eighth and ninth but couldn’t bring a run home. In the ninth, Julio Vasquez walked and moved to second with a stolen base, but the Falcons were able to get a strikeout to end the game.

Becker (Nevada) finished 2-for-4 with a run scored. Vasquez was 2-for-3 with a walk and stolen base. Isiah Walz (Concordia College), Roberto Nunez (Embry-Riddle) and Brock Mayer (Chaffey College) all had hits.

The Lefties (4-9 second half, 12-28 overall) play at 6:35 p.m. Saturday night against Kelowna and wrap up their series with the Falcons (8-5 second half, 22-18) with a 6 p.m. game Sunday at Elks Field in Kelowna. The games can be watched on
