PORT ANGELES LEFTIES: Former Lefty Matthew Christian named a college baseball All-American

PORTLAND — Matt Christian, who starred for the Port Angeles Lefties in 2018 and 2019, was named to the NCAA All-America third team by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association.

Christian, a fifth-year senior first baseman, played this past season at Campbell University in North Carolina. Campbell plays in the Big South Conference.

This past season, Christian put up spectacular numbers for the Fighting Camels, hitting .350 with 16 home runs and 65 RBIs. His slugging percentage was .685 and his on-base plus slugging was 1.085.

Christian hit .248 with six home runs and 23 RBIs in 2018. In 2019, his numbers improved dramatically, as he hit .314 with 12 home runs, 31 RBIs, 10 doubles and 13 stolen bases for the Lefties.

Six other West Coast League alumni were named to All-America teams.

Outfielder Aaron Zavala of Oregon, who played for the Ridgefield Raptors in 2019, made the Baseball America All-America first team.

Brooks Lee, a Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo shortstop who also played for the Corvallis Knights, made the second team. Making the third team was Stanford pitcher Brendan Beck, who played for Corvallis in the WCL.

Making the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association All-America teams were Zavala to the first team and Beck to the second team. Stanford pitcher Zach Grech, who played for Bellingham in 2017, made the second team, as well.

In addition to Christian, making the third team were Baylor pitcher Luke Boyd (Victoria HarbourCats, 2017) and Oregon pitcher Kolby Somers (Corvallis, 2017).
