PORT ANGELES HALL OF FAME: Dinner, induction ceremony postponed

PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles Hall of Fame dinner and induction ceremony, originally set for April 18, will be rescheduled, Hall of Fame officials announced Sunday.

Officials said they are postponing the event in order to make sure that novel coronavirus issues have been resolved.

“We will let everyone know the new dates as soon as possible,” said Hall of Fame chairman Bruce Skinner.

Eleven former Port Angeles High School athletes and coaches and two teams have been selected for induction into the 2020 Port Angeles High School Roughrider Hall of Fame. This is the third year for the Hall of Fame.

They include:

• Cherie Simkins (Class of 1962), national champion PA badminton player, winner of 13 world championship triathlon titles.

• Curt Bagby, winningest Port Angeles football and girls basketball coach

• Bob Sheedy, most wins for track and cross county, national masters champion for pentathlon and decathlon.

• Randy Steinman (1983), all-state pitcher, coached boy’s baseball and girls softball to highest finishes ever.

• Sam Hurworth (1957), led state in scoring as a fullback and went on to play on UW’s two Rose Bowl teams (1960 and 1961).

• Sonny Luke (1960), star running back who went on to become a junior college All-American.

• Matt Lane (2003), hit .702 his senior season, went on to become starting catcher at the University of Washington for three years.

• Austin Fahrenholtz (2012), two-time state diving champion, current state record holder.

• Janessa Roening (2002), All-Big 12 softball at the University of Missouri.

• Jenny Nixon (1989), state champion swimmer and captain of University of Washington swim team.

• Bob Peterson (1963), High School All-American in football, played at Stanford, worked in the White House with President Jimmy Carter.

• The 1966 boys basketball team that finished second in the state tournament.

• The 1986 girls basketball team, which also finished second in the state tournament.
