ELLENSBURG — After taking second at state, the North Olympic Baseball and Softball’s 10U Cal Ripken Baseball All-Stars will head to the Pacific Northwest regional tournament next week in Kennewick.
The Port Angeles All-Stars posted a 5-2 record at state, playing seven games in three days, to finish second to Moses Lake.
Port Angeles won the state and regional 9U tournaments in 2021, but no World Series was held due to COVID-19. The North Olympic squad instead received an entry into the 2022 regional tournament.
Manager Rob Merritt said the team has posted a 16-3-1 record, winning tournaments in Yelm and Tacoma this summer.
Pacific Northwest Regional Tournament play will begin July 21 and run through July 24.
The regional winner will advance to the Cal Ripken 10U World Series in Vincennes, Ind.
Soccer referee training
AGNEW — Youth soccer referees are needed around the North Olympic Peninsula and the state.
All referees must be registered with the U.S. Soccer Federation through the Washington State Referee Committee and complete a two-step process.
First, potential refs must take an online course and pass a test at WAReferees.org. Click on “I want to be a referee” and follow the directions.
The second step is to attend a field clinic.
A field clinic is set at the Agnew Soccer Fields from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Aug. 6.
Once both steps are complete, referees can work around the state and register with the Washington Officials Association, which governs high school officials.

PAHS basketball tourney
PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles High School boys basketball program will host its Roughrider Summer Classic at the Rider gym this Saturday and Sunday.
The 17-team event includes pool play followed by playoff semifinals and a championship game Sunday evening.
Three Port Angeles squads, two Sequim teams, plus Forks and East Jefferson teams will represent the Peninsula.
Other teams coming to town include Grandview, Cedarcrest, Charles Wright, Entiat, Stadium and Central Kitsap.
Games get started at 11 a.m. Saturday with Forks taking on East Jefferson in the main gym while Sequim No. 2 and PA No. 3 face off on the auxiliary court.
Sunday’s play opens at 10 a.m. with pool play.
The semifinals are scheduled for 4 p.m.
