CHIMACUM — Chimacum got a great pitching performance from Issac Purser and Cole Dotson to shut out Vashon 5-0 in a pigtail game to move forward in the West Central District 3 1A Baseball Tournament.
The Cowboys (7-7 overall) must win another loser-out game at 4 p.m. Tuesday at Cascade Christian in Puyallup if they want to get into the double-elimination portion of the tournament.
“It was good pitching and timely hitting,” said coach Bob Eldridge. Sophomores Purser and Dotson combined for a one-hitter as Purser went five innings and Dotson pitched in relief to close out the game.
Andrew Serrato had two RBIs and freshman Cody Clark had an RBI for the Cowboys.
Meanwhile, at the West Central 2A District Tournament, Port Angeles and Sequim each split a pair of games and will be playing do-or-die games on Wednesday to keep moving forward in the tournament.
West Central 2A Tournament
Port Angeles 4, Steilacoom 1
SILVERDALE — The Roughriders, the No. 2 seed out of the Olympic League, won their District Tournament opener 4-1 over Steilacoom behind a six-hit complete game gem from Colton McGuffey. McGuffey struck out nine and walked just one batter in Saturday’s game played at the Kitsap County Fairgrounds.
The Riders (12-7 overall) managed only four hits, all singles, in the pitchers’ duel. Hayden Woods and Joel Wood each scored a run and drove in a run, while Ben Basden had an RBI.
This win set up a second-round game against Fife later in the day.

The Roughriders found themselves in another pitchers’ duel in a game that had just seven hits total. The Riders’ Dane Bradow pitched a great game, going six innings and giving up just four hits and two earned runs. But, the Riders couldn’t generate much offense themselves against the Trojans, managing just three hits.
Luke Angevine had a hit and two RBIs for the Roughriders, while Noah McGoff and Basden each scored runs.
The split earned the Riders the right to play White River at Franklin Pierce High School in Tacoma at 3 p.m. Wednesday. Sequim crushed White River in the tournament 11-1. That is a loser out game. If the Riders win, they will play again Saturday at Franklin Pierce against the winner of Washington and River Ridge.

TACOMA — Sequim, the No. 3 seed out the Olympic 2A League, took advantage of six White River errors to explode for 10 runs in the first three innings in an 11-1 West District 2A Tournament opener Saturday.
Gavin Velarde was a one-man wrecking crew for the Wolves, going 3 for 3 with a double, triple and a walk, scoring four runs, driving in three and stealing two bases. James Thayer also had three RBIs, while Justin Porter, James Grubb and Jared Thomas all scored two runs.
Austin Hilliard pitched an outstanding game, going five innings, giving up just one hit and one earned run and striking out four.
This win set up a second-round game against Eatonville in the afternoon.

Eatonville 6, Sequim 1
Sequim was tied 1-1 with Eatonville going into the sixth inning, but then the Cruisers erupted for five runs in the sixth to blow the game open.
The Wolves managed just four hits in the game. Velarde went 2 for 3 with a double and an RBI (going 5 for 6 on the day). Johnnie Young had a double for the Wolves and Porter a hit.
Ian Miller went five innings for the Wolves, giving up three earned runs on six hits with no walks. Eatonville pitchers combined for 10 strikeouts in the game.
The split sends the Wolves (13-6 overall) to Silverdale on Wednesday to play Steilacoom in a loser-out game at 6:30 p.m. at the Kitsap County Fairgrounds. Port Angeles beat the Sentinels earlier in the tournament 4-1. If Sequim wins, the Wolves will move on to play Saturday against the winner of Olympic and Franklin Pierce.

Montesano 8, Forks 0
MONTESANO — Forks needed a win over undefeated league champion Montesano to qualify for postseason, but the Spartans couldn’t manage an upset Saturday in an 8-0 loss.
Forks ended up in a three-way tie for third place in the Evergreen 1A League at 4-8 (Montesano dominated the league with a 12-0 record and Tenino finished second at 6-6). But, Hoquiam had the tiebreakers in its favor and the Grizzlies will move on to the District 4 1A Tournament.
