PORT ANGELES — The No. 1-ranked Peninsula College soccer men’s team remained unbeaten heading into Saturday’s monster match against No. 2-ranked and undefeated Whatcom.
The men beat Edmonds 8-0 Wednesday at Wally Sigmar Field. Meanwhile, the No. 1-ranked women got two goals from former Port Angeles Roughrider Millie Long, winning over Edmonds 3-0. The women bounced back from a road draw last week.
The 10-0-0 men will play 10-0-0 Whatcom at 2 p.m. Saturday at Wally Sigmar Field. The Whatcom men have scored 37 goals and allowed only eight, while the Peninsula men have scored 35 goals and allowed only five.
In the men’s game, Jonathan DeMotta and Hayahide Sakamoto each scored a pair of goals. Nico Hernandez, Kai Beigler, Christopher Dominguez and Isaiah Penninston-John each scored goals. Yusaku Shimakura had two assists, while Hernandez, Dominguez, Tim Deser and Theodore Baiye all had assists.
Goalkeeper Alejandro Lopez stopped six shots and earned the win and the shutout for the Pirates, the seventh shutout of the season for Peninsula.
Women’s game
Long, a 2021 graduate of Port Angeles High School, had her second two-goal game this season for the Pirates. She now has five goals and 11 points for the Pirates, just behind Chimacum High School’s Grace Johnson, who leads the team with six goals and 15 points.
Johnson is fifth in the NWAC in goals and 10th in points, while Long is sixth in goals and 13th in points.
Cece Jenkins also had a goal in Wednesday’s match, while Jayden Brown, Mackenzie Corkill and Angelica Gutierrez all had assists.
Peninsula dominated with shots, much as the Pirates did in a frustrating 0-0 tie at Skagit Valley on Oct. 2. Against Edmonds, the Pirates outshot Edmonds 20-5, but this time made them count with a trio of goals. The Peninsula women also had a staggering 13-0 edge in corner kicks.
Keeper Musuai Isaia stopped four shots to earn the win and the shutout. It was the women’s eighth shutout of the season and fourth in a row.
The Peninsula women have now gone 385 straight minutes, not counting stoppage time, without allowing a goal.
The Peninsula women (8-0-2, 7-0-1) open Saturday’s play at home at noon against a good Whatcom (5-2-4, 4-2-2) team.
