Peninsula men beat Highline in scrimmage

SEQUIM — Playing for the first time in Sequim with recent Sequim graduate Josiah Urquia on the squad, the Peninsula College men beat defending West Division champion Highline 2-1 in a scrimmage at Carrie Blake Park on Friday.

The game was played at Carrie Blake Park due to maintenance work being done at the Pirates’ home field.

The first half was scoreless. Highline took a 1-0 lead in the second half, but Peninsula answered with about 15 minutes left in the match with a goal by Juan Carrillo-Perez. Carrillo-Perez later scored the game winner at the end of the game when he was fouled on a breakaway just outside the penalty box. His direct free kick from about 22 yards out went through a line of defenders and into the right corner of the net. The game ended immediately afterward.

The Pirates open regular season play at the 2017 Northwest Conference Friendlies at the Starfire Soccer Complex in Tukwila, taking on defending NWAC champion Tacoma at 6 p.m. Thursday. Tacoma knocked the Pirates out of the playoffs last season en route to the championship. Their first home match is Sept. 13 against Everett College.
