PORT ANGELES — The Peninsula men’s and women’s basketball teams both beat Skagit Valley on Saturday with big offensive games.
The men won 87-72, getting 27 points from Ty Artis and 20 from Jaylin Reed, in knocking off the first-place Cardinals. The women won 85-67 with 27 points coming from Keeli-Jade Smith and 17 from Ariyanna Camacho-Villafuerte.
Men’s game
The Pirates shot 55.6 percent (30-for-54) from the floor and 47.1 percent (8-for-17) from 3-point range. Artis shot 10-for-14 from the field, while Reed shot 6-for-7 and made a pair of 3-pointers.
Isaiah Sampson also scored 14 points and had 10 rebounds, while KeAndre Hunter-Holiday had 12 points.
“They [Skagit Valley] gave us a good licking last Friday [a 75-63 win over Peninsula],” said coach Donald Rollman. “We returned the favor.
“Even the threes we missed, we had pretty open looks. We executed our game plan,” Rollman said.
The win puts the Pirates at 9-5 on the season, in third place, one game behind 9-3 Skagit Valley.

Women’s game
The Peninsula women also shot great, going 33-for-59 from the floor (55.9 percent) and 63.6 percent from 3-point range (14-for-22). Camacho-Villafuerte had five 3-pointers while Smith had four. Smith also scored her 27 points in just 17 minutes on the floor.
Tatianna Kamae also had three 3-pointers and scored 10. Kamae and Amari Brown each had five assists, while Brown added four steals.
“We were on fire,” said coach Alison Crumb. “I don’t know what was in the water.”
Crumb said she was going to research if the 14 3-pointers was a Peninsula College women’s record. “I’m sure it’s pretty close,” she said.
In addition the 3-pointers, Crumb said the Pirates also had an impressive 25 assists. Six women had at least three assists.
It was the seventh win in nine games for the women, who started the season 0-2.
“We’re a freshman-heavy team,” Crumb said. “I didn’t think we would progress as fast as we have.”
The men play at Everett (7-6) on Wednesday. The women play first-place Bellevue (9-2) at 7 p.m. today at home. This is a makeup game.

Thursday’s women’s game
Peninsula 82, Whatcom 60
BELLINGHAM — Peninsula College got off to a fast start and then closed strong in an 82-60 romp over Whatcom last week.
The Pirates got out to a 23-9 lead in the first quarter, then ran away with the game with a 29-point fourth quarter, outscoring the Orcas by 12 points in the final frame.
Tayvia Cabatbat led the Pirates with 21 points, while Hope Glasser of Sequim High School had 15 points, seven rebounds and four steals, and Camacho-Villafuerte had 15 points and five steals. Kamae had nine points and eight rebounds.

Men’s soccer

BELLINGHAM —The Peninsula College men’s soccer team grabbed a stranglehold on first place in the North Region with a flurry of second-half goals to beat Whatcom 3-1 on Thursday.
The game was a battle for first place as both teams came into the match with a single loss.
The defending NWAC champion Pirates lost to Whatcom early in the season when the team was hit with a number of red cards. Peninsula won the rematch, then took the rubber match on the road.
The Pirates were down 1-0 at the half and remained down well into the second half. Finally in the 69th minute, the Pirates broke through with a goal by Fernando Tavares, assisted by Keigo Takai.
In the 79th minute, Kai Biegler scored an insurance goal with an assist to Yutatsu Taira. In the 85th minute, Biegler scored again, with the assist going to Takai.
Peninsula’s Ian Dalton made six saves in goal to pick up the win.
The Pirates (7-1) will next play at 4:15 p.m. Monday at home at Wally Sigmar Field against Everett (2-4-1).
