EDMONDS — The Peninsula College soccer teams are both within one game of undefeated seasons after each team won by the identical score of 2-0 over the Edmonds men’s and women’s teams.
Both Peninsula teams are ranked No. 1 in the NWAC and ranked among the top 6 in the nation among community colleges. Both teams also continue to put up incredible defensive numbers.
For the women (13-0-1 in league, 14-0-2 overall), it was their seventh straight shutout and 11th shutout of the season. The women’s scoreless streak, not counting a pair of forfeits with Everett and not counting stoppage time, is now up to 655 minutes. The women have allowed only two goals all season.
For the men (11-0-0, 14-0-0), it was their third straight shutout and 10th shutout of the season. The men have allowed seven goals this season.
In the women’s game, Port Angeles High School graduate Millie Long had a goal in the fifth minute, with an assist to Alyssa Konarek. It was Long’s seventh goal of the season. Malia Miller scored early in the second half with an assist to Kapri McMillan.
In the men’s game, the match was scoreless until midway through the second half. Shu Kato scored in the 62nd minute for the Pirates, with an assist to Dylan Pauw. Nicholas Namwali scored in the 88th minute, with an assist to Alfonso Edfeldt.
The men in particular have a huge game coming up Wednesday with perhaps their biggest test of the season. They will be at Whatcom, the No. 2-ranked team in the NWAC. Whatcom (10-1-0, 12-1-0) is also in the top 10 in the nation. The Orcas’ lone loss this season came at Wally Sigmar Field when the Pirates scored two goals late in the second half to win a very physical match 4-2. That game will be played at 5:15 p.m. and can be viewed at www.nwacsportsnetwork.com.
The men have already clinched a playoff berth, but need to win Wednesday’s game to clinch the North Region championship.
The women have clinched both a playoff berth and a North Region championship. They play a good Whatcom team (7-3-3, 8-3-5) at 3 p.m. Wednesday in Bellingham. That game will also be aired on www.nwacsportsnetwork.com.
