PENINSULA COLLEGE: Pirates and NWAC honor school’s top athletes

PORT ANGELES — Peninsula College Athletics celebrated another successful year, winning all four North Region championships in men’s and women’s basketball and soccer for only the second time in history, handing out its annual sports awards to student athletes at an event this week in the Pirate Union Building.

In soccer, the Wally Sigmar Award went to Chiaki Takase, of Kaisei, Japan, a technically skilled midfielder who helped the Pirates win an NWAC title in 2021 and a region championship this year, and to Tim Deser, of Obing, Germany, also a midfielder who helped the men’s team to back-to-back region championships.

The Pirate Gold Award went to two players who are coming back in the fall — redshirt sophomore defender Caneel Corpuz of Hilo, Hawaii, and Maurin Frehner, a midfielder from Zurich, Switzerland.

In basketball, the Art Feiro Award for the women’s team went to Ituau Tuisaula of Soldotna, Alaska. She also won back-to-back league titles and the MVP of the North Region. The men’s Art Feiro Award winner, also the North Region MVP, was Roosevelt Williams Jr. of Perth, Australia.

The Pirate Gold winner for women’s basketball was Port Angeles’ Millie Long, who also was named the NWAC soccer Baden Player of the Year for 2022 at the NWAC awards ceremonies recently held in Pasco.

Long won four league titles in basketball and soccer and an NWAC title in soccer in her two years wearing black and gold and will be playing soccer and basketball for Cal Poly Humboldt next year. The men’s Pirate Gold award winner was Mikey Medlock Jr. from Las Vegas, Nev.

In Pirate Esports, the MVP award went to Lily Doten of Port Angeles, who plays Rocket League, and the Inspirational Award went to Savannah Hickman of Sequim, who specializes in Overwatch.
