PENINSULA COLLEGE BASKETBALL: Pirates’ Long scores 20 in win; Men win two straight

PUYALLUP — Peninsula College’s Millie Long had her first 20-point college game, scoring nearly half of the Pirates’ points in a 43-38 win over Wenatchee Valley at the Pierce College Tournament on Sunday.

Long, a Port Angeles High School graduate, shot 8-for-10 from the field.

In fact, most of Peninsula’s points came from Olympic Peninsula products. Sequim’s Hope Glasser had eight points and Port Angeles’ Madison Cooke had six.

It was the second time this season the Pirates have beaten Wenatchee Valley.

Peninsula (6-2) next plays Thursday versus South Puget Sound (3-1) at an NWAC Crossover tournament.

EDMONDS — The Peninsula College men’s basketball team allowed one point over the final six minutes to come from behind to beat SW Oregon College 77-68 in the team’s finale Sunday at the Edmonds Classic.

SW Oregon led the most of the game. The Lakers were clinging to a 67-64 lead with 6:04 left when the Pirates’ defense allowed just a single free throw the rest of the way, closing out the game on a 13-1 run. SW Oregon shot 0-for-11 to finish the game.

The win improved Peninsula’s record to 7-2. The Pirates were led by Roosevelt Williams with 20 points, while Isaac Garcia had 14.

D’Ante Dean and Jaylin Reed each had 13 points, while Michael Medlock had nine.

In Saturday’s Edmonds Classic game, the Pirates got a bit of revenge on Clackamas with their highest offensive output of the season in an 89-71 win.

The Pirates got 25 points and eight rebounds from Reed. KeAndre Hunter-Holiday and Williams each had 11, while Dean had nine. Isaiah Sampson and Medlock each had eight points.

Clackamas beat Peninsula earlier this season 73-67.

Peninsula (7-2) next plays Tacoma (3-4) at the Yakima Crossover Tournament on Thursday. The Pirates beat the Titans earlier this month 76-62.
