PENINSULA ADVENTURE SPORTS: 84 teams, 11 Iron individuals take on Frosty Moss

PORT ANGELES — The Frosty Moss lived up to its billing with some heavy rains and typical Olympic Peninsula nippy spring temperatures, but it didn’t cool off the fun for more than 80 teams and 11 hardy Ironman individuals who took on the 80-mile and 30-mile courses from the Sol Duc Valley to Blyn.

The winner of the two- to three-person team was The Billy Squires in a time of 10 hours, 20 minutes, 29 seconds, which was also good for second overall. The winner of the four- to five-person team category was Frosty Rocks in a time of 9:05:07.

Taking first in the 30-mile Mini Moss from Ediz Hook to Blyn was Athlete’s Choice in a time of 3:53:29.

In the tough 50K Ironman division, the winner was Scott Whitmore in a time of 4:49:20.29 and the women’s winner was Anique Johnson in 5:42:07. Johnson’s time was good for fourth overall.

The Frosty Moss also has plenty of more whimsical awards and medals as teams dress up in costumes and dress their support vehicles up. The “Mediocrity Award,” the team that finished with the average time among the 54 teams was T.A.K.E.N Me All Damn Day with a time of 13:30:11.

The Last Slug Standing for the last place team went to “Hell NO! Wait, do we get a medal?” team with a time of 16:00:55.

The Best Team Theme award went to the Tator Trots with Smell the Rainbow finishing second. The top Influencer Team was T.A.K.E.N Me All Damn Day.

The best exchange zone by a youth group was the Sequim High School cross-country team, and the best exchange zone went to FM Exchange 4 “Pacific Northwest,” the Bryant Family.

A total of 56 teams took on the 80-mile race, with 54 of them finishing. Frosty Rocks dominated, beating the second-place team by 1 hour and 15 minutes.

A total of 28 teams took on the Mini Moss. Athlete’s Choice likewise won by a wide margin, beating the second-place team by more than 26 minutes. Every Mini Moss team and all 11 50K Ironman competitors finished.

The Frosty Moss Relay is put on by Peninsula Adventure Sports, which puts on a variety of other endurance races around the Olympic Peninsula all year, including the Olympic Adventure Trail run April 12, the Great Olympic Adventure Trail run Sept. 6, the Gravel Unravel series on June 14 and July 26, the Big Hurt and the Little Hurt on Sept. 27-28 and the Salt Creek 24 on Oct. 25-26.

Top finishers in each race include:

Frosty Moss 4- to 5-person team — Frosty Rocks, first, 9:05:07.9; Grantastic 5, second, 10:23:54.5; Oatmeal Gang, third, 10:33:46.1.

Frosty Moss 2- to 3-person team — The Billy Squiers, first, 10:20:29.8; OGs, second, 11:08:36.1; Denim Digglers, third, 11:17:10.3.

Mini Moss — Athlete’s Choice, first, 3:53:29.7; Team Renard, second, 4:19:38.7; PEFC, third, 4:21:44.

Ironman men — Scott Whitmore, first, 4:49:15.1; Legan Danyluk, second, 5:02:28.2; Micah Roberton, third, 5:37:01.6.

Ironman women — Anique Johnson, first, 5:42:07.7; Jacqueline Guyader, second, 6:34:09.3; Vicki Heckman, third, 7:11:37.4.
