PORT ANGELES — A goal in the 90th minute salvaged a 1-1 tie for the Whatcom Orcas and prevented the Peninsula men’s soccer team from winning its 10th match in a row.
The Pirates had a 1-0 lead in the waning moments at Wally Sigmar Field on Saturday when the Orcas’ Chay Mattos scored to ruin the shutout.
Whatcom is the second-place team in the Northwest Athletic Conference North Division with a 6-1-2 record. The Orcas came into the match having allowed just 10 goals all season. The Pirates (8-0-1, 10-0-2) remain in first place atop the North Division.
Juan Carrillo scored in the 18th minute to give Peninsula the lead. His goal was assisted by Michael Day. Brannon Dwyer had three saves for the Pirates.
Peninsula goes on the road for its next game, playing at 2 p.m. Wednesday against Edmonds.
Going into the stretch run of the regular season, Carrillo and Gervacio, who actually didn’t play a couple of early games, are fourth in the NWAC in points with 19 each.
Gervacio is tied for third in goals scored with nine.
Women’s soccer Peninsula 3, Whatcom 0
PORT ANGELES — The Peninsula soccer women extended both their winning streak and their shutout streak to nine games by beating Whatcom 3-0 at home.
Goals were scored by Kelly Kevershan at the 34th minute with an assist to Hoku Afong, and Emilee Greve at the 47th minute with the assist by Coby Yoshimura. Whatcom scored an own goal in the 36th minute.
During Peninsula’s (9-0, 10-1-1) nine-game shutout streak, the women have outscored their opponents 46-0. The Pirates have given up only four goals all season.
The North Division first-place Pirates will next go on the road to play Edmonds at noon Wednesday in Lynnwood.
Interestingly, though they have scored 52 total goals, the Pirates don’t have a single player in the top 20 for scoring in the NWAC. They do, however, have seven women with double-digits in points, led by Hoku Ofong with seven goals and 18 points. Eleanor Small has 16 points, Marriah Perez 14, Sydney Warren 13, Maddy Parton 11, Coby Yoshimura 11, and Jazmin Ramos, 10.
Pirate goalkeeper Akari Hoshino leads the NWAC with six shutouts on the season. This stat also moves her into the Peninsula record books for single-season shutouts. She is currently tied with Emily Flinn for fifth-most all-time.
