OUTDOORS: Matt Schubert’s five best bets to do this weekend

■ Strait halibut — Yes, the tides are a little less than desirable. Yes, the fishing has been a little less than spectacular.

But the Port Angeles Salmon Club’s annual halibut derby (set for May 27-29) is just one week away in the central Strait.

Whatever edge you can get going into that thing will be well worth it. Like, say, the derby’s $5,000 top prize (part of a $20,000 prize package.)

■ Hood Canal shrimp — The last opener (May 14) was the most productive of the bunch.

With some calm waters and even calmer crowds — Hood Canal shrimping is so last week — there’s little reason to think we can’t get a repeat performance this Wednesday.

■ Sequim Kids Fishing Day — A total of 1,500 trout have been dumped into the Sequim water reclamation pond for Saturday morning’s event.

As long as you’re 14 years old or younger, it should be pretty easy to hook at least one of them.

And you won’t even have to pay for it.

■ Tongue Point tour — Tongue Point is one of the better day hikes on the North Olympic Peninsula when the tides are right this time of year.

Warm weather, sunny skies and minus morning tides allow hikers to get up close and personal with the area’s countless tides pools and diverse sea life.

Located on the Northwest tip of Salt Creek Recreation Area just north of Joyce, it doesn’t require a lengthy drive either.

■ River fishing class — Brian’s Sporting Goods and More will hold a free two-day river fishing class this Tuesday night and next (May 31) at its Sequim shop, 542 W. Washington St.

The class will focus on salmon and steelhead fishing in North Olympic Peninsula rivers, with students getting tips on gear, fishing methods and locations.

Each session will run from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

To register, call Brian’s Sporting Goods at 360-683-1950.
