OUTDOORS: Matt Schubert’s five best bets to do this weekend

■ Coastal salmon — Why not spend the sabbath chasing after salmon?

Area 3 (LaPush) and 4 (Neah Bay) open to wild chinook and hatchery coho retention this Sunday. From all reports, there’s plenty of fish around and not many anglers.

Sounds perfect.

■ Lake Sutherland — It’s times like these when you’re thankful the state didn’t shut down Lake Sutherland completely.

There’s sunny skies, warm weather and lots of trout.

“Me and my boy went out there and got eight fish [Tuesday evening],” Bob Aunspach of Swain’s General Store said.

“I was talking to a guy here a little bit ago who said he was limiting out there every day.”

■ Calawah steelhead — If you can get on the river by first light, this can be a great fishery.

Bring a bobber and jig and just be patient. Eventually, one of those fish might be dumb enough to actually strike it.

■ PA shrimp — After a slow start, shrimpers are starting to pull a fair amount of crustaceans out of Port Angeles Harbor.

While it might not be as productive as, say, a morning in Hood Canal, it’s enough to through together a handful of cocktails.

■ Freshwater Bay kayaking — As I mentioned in Thursday’s column, Freshwater Bay is one of the premiere sea kayak destinations on the Peninsula.

If the weather warms at the start of next week — as it is supposed to per the weather man — it should be a good time to paddle out there.

Olympic Raft and Kayak (360-452-1443) and Adventures through Kayaking (360-417-3015) both offer tours for those who don’t have a kayak.
