OUTDOORS: Matt Schubert’s five best bets to do this weekend

• Area 9 mystery — Nobody wants to tell me anything about Area 9 (Admiralty Inlet) blackmouth.

Does that mean it’s so good nobody wants to share? Or does that mean it’s so bad nobody wants to talk about it?

Could somebody please head out there and report back so I don’t have to throw darts at a wall?

• Clamoring for clams — Diggers get another chance to score razor clams today and Saturday at Kalaloch.

Yes, the conditions look less than appealing. But you know what they say: “A bad day clamming . . . really stinks.”

Wait, maybe you should just stay home.

• Wilson birding — Admiralty Audubon’s Ron Sikes will lead a beach walk field trip to Point Wilson on Saturday morning.

A group will meet at the Point Wilson parking area at 9 a.m. before heading toward the beach to view birds and wildlife until 11 a.m.

To register for the trip, contact Sikes at 360-385-0307 or sikes@olympus.net.

• Dam good talk — Olympic National Park will sponsor a second showing of “Elwha Power” at the Port Angeles branch of the North Olympic Library System, 2210 S. Peabody St., Tuesday at 7 p.m.

The slide show focuses on the history of the two hydropower dams built on the Elwha River early in the 20th century.

It will feature several previously unreleased photos of the Elwha and Glines Canyon dams and the river itself.

• Fly class — Those looking to learn the basics of fly fishing can attend a free two-session class at Brian’s Sporting Goods and More starting next Tuesday.

The class will go over gear, techniques and the basics for river and lake fishing on the Peninsula. It will meet from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday and Feb. 1 at the Sequim shop at 542 W. Washington St.

To register for the class, call the store at 360-683-1950.
