OUTDOORS: Matt Schubert’s five best bets to do this weekend

• Plunkers’ paradise — As soon as these rivers drop, get out the Spin-N-Glo and head to the Sol Duc.

From all accounts, there are plenty of fish swimming around that river,

• Shred of style — Snowboarders can learn the tricks of the trade at a free clinic at the Hurricane Ridge terrain park Monday from noon to 2 p.m.

The clinic is geared toward beginners, but more experienced riders are welcome to attend and perhaps learn a thing or two.

• Spaghetti feed — Puget Sound Anglers-North Olympic Peninsula Chapter will hold its annual fundraising dinner and auction next Thursday night in Sequim.

Doors open at 5 p.m. at the Guy Cole Convention Center inside Carrie Blake Park in Sequim, with a free spaghetti dinner served at 5:30 p.m.

Silent auctions will be held all night, with a live auction following dinner. Proceeds provide funding for the Kids Fishing Program at the Sequim water reclamation pond.

For more information, contact Herb Prins at 360-582-0836.

• Fly-tying seminar — Waters West Fly Fishing Outfitters will host the first in a series of free fly-tying seminars Saturday at its Port Angeles shop.

This week’s seminar will focus on winter steelhead riggings, going over lines, sinks tips, knots and other odds and ends.

The seminar begins at 10 a.m. in the shop, located at 140 W. Front St.

• Hawks grounded? — Sure, I didn’t think the Seattle Seahawks would win last week’s home playoff with New Orleans, but give me this much: I picked them to cover.

Now that the Hawks must travel to the Windy City to take on the Bears this Sunday at 10 a.m., I’m even more skeptical.

It’s just hard to imagine the offense matching last week’s 41-point effort, especially on the road.

And as much as it pains me to say it, I doubt the Hawks will sack Jay Cutler — whom I loath for taking Jake Plummer’s job four years ago in Denver — six times like they did in their Week 6 win.

The Hawks are 10-point underdogs going into this one. No way I’d pick them to cover.
