OUTDOORS: Marine Area 9 to be reopened to Friday to hatchery Chinook

Marine Area 9 open to Friday for hatchery Chinook

OLYMPIA — The state Department of Fish and Wildlife has reopened Marine Area 9 to hatchery chinook from today until Friday.

The WDFW has determined that sufficient quote is available in Marine Area 9 to keep the fishery open an additional four days. Marine Area 9 south of a line from Foulweather Bluff to Olele Point remains closed to salmon fishing.

The fishery was also extended once on Sunday and was closed Monday. WDFW managers met Monday to discuss if it could be reopened again.

The daily limit of salmon is two and up to one hatchery Chinook may be kept with a minimum size of 22 inches. Wild Chinook, chum and wild Coho must be released.

On Friday, fisheries managers will evaluate the fishery again and if sufficient quota remains available, WDFW will announce if Marine Area 9 will reopen again to hatchery Chinook retention.

For additional regulations, anglers should consult the 2019-20 Washington Sports Fishing Rules pamphlet available online at http://wdfw.wa.gov/fishing/regulations/.

Anglers can check WDFW’s website at https://wdfw.wa.gov/fishing/reports for the latest information on marine areas that are managed to a quota or guideline.
