OUTDOORS: Archery tuneup event in Port Angeles ahead of September hunting seasons

HUNTERS LOOKING TO notch some bows in preparation for September’s start of early archery black-tailed deer and elk seasons have some opportunities.

Port Angeles’ Waipiti Bowmen will hold their annual Hunter’s Warmup 3-D Target Shoot today and Sunday at the club property, 374 Arnette Road (off Monroe Road).

The shoot is open to the public and will offer 30-plus targets spread out through the club’s acreage.

Registration opens at 7:30 a.m. today and Sunday.

Shooting fees are $12 (one day) and $20 (both days) for adults, $8 and $10 for ages 12-17, $4 and $5 for ages 6-11 and free for 5 and younger.

Breakfast and lunch will be available and on-site camping also is offered.

For more information, call Nick Roberts at 360-582-7987.

Early archery black-tailed deer season runs from Sept. 1-23 and early archery elk season from Sept. 10-22.

Multi-season deer tags are $139.10, and multi-season elk tags are $182. There is no purchase deadline for elk or deer multi-season tags.

Chinook still available

Kings are still open off Neah Bay and La Push and anglers are still finding them, although the catch ratio has flipped in hatchery coho’s direction.

Marine Area 3 (La Push) is at 670 of its 995 chinook guideline, a total that is in effect through Sept. 30. Another 125 chinook will be available in a late-season fishery opening Oct. 5.

Anglers are estimated to have landed 28-percent or 1,244 of the area’s 4.370 coho quota.

Neah Bay (Marine Area 4) anglers have brought in an estimated 76 percent or 4,627 of the area’s 6,110 chinook guideline, but only nine percent (1,565) of the area’s 17,470 hatchery coho quota.

Pheasant or deer

Hunters who attend one of two informational meetings and pass background checks will have the chance to hunt released pheasant or upland game (deer) on Naval Air Station Whidbey Island.

Meetings are scheduled for Aug. 30 and Sept. 13 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Building 130, Gallery Golf Course.

Information handouts will cover on-base hunting permit requirements, hunting areas and base access procedures. Hunters may register, pay the $13 permit fee and receive an installation hunting permit.

All civilian hunters must submit to a National Crime Information Check (NCIC) background check at NAS Whidbey Island prior to being issued an installation hunting permit.

To request access to hunt and get an NCIC background check, hunters must pick up the required form at the base’s Pass & ID office (building 2853, 360-257-5620) just outside Langley Gate at Ault Field. Questions may be directed to John Phillips at 360-257-8873.
