SILVERDALE — The Sequim girls tennis team capped an unbeaten regular season with a dominant performance at the Class 1A/2A/3A Olympic League championships — claiming the overall team title and the singles and doubles championships.
“Sequim had a great tournament,” Wolves coach Mark Textor said. “League champs. Singles champs. Doubles champs. Every entry into the tournament finished [in the] top four.”
Senior Kalli Wiker capped an unbeaten season with the singles championship, dropping just three sets in four match wins during the tournament, including a 6-1, 6-0 win over Bainbridge’s Ella Parker in the championship match.
Wiker is still the defending 2A doubles tennis state champion from 2019. The season was canceled last year and there is no state tournament this year.
Sisters McKenna and Kendall Hastings were doubles champs after going 4-0 including a 6-3, 6-1 title match victory over Kingston’s Bree Jorgensen and Ellie Brockman.
Melissa Porter and Allie Gale teamed up to finish fourth for the Wolves.
Port Angeles’ Emma Olsen earned a fifth-place finish in singles at the Class 1A/2A/3A Olympic League Championships at Central Kitsap High School.
Olivia Preston battled through the consolation bracket, winning two third-set tiebreakers along the way to eventually finish fourth for Sequim.
Port Angeles’ top finish was Emma Olsen, who placed fifth in singles after winning two loser-out matches to stay alive.
Other Roughrider competitors included singles players Liberty Lauer and the doubles duos of Hannah Reetz and Shannon Callahan and Reagan and Eden Critchfield.
East Jefferson’s Maddie Hess and the doubles team of Sophie Arnovitz and Tiffany Bell also competed at the league tournament.
Boys soccer North Mason 1, Port Angeles 0
BELFAIR — The Port Angeles Roughriders were shut out 1-0 by North Mason in their crossover season-ending soccer match held Friday at North Mason High School.
The Riders finished their season 3-7-0 in conference and 4-8-0 overall.
“The Bulldogs had the majority of the possession and passed the ball well out of the back against Port Angeles on Friday night at North Mason,” said coach Chris Saari. “Port Angeles created a few good chances throughout the game and pressed at the end, but were unable to get anything by a good Bulldog goalkeeper with limited opportunities.”
North Mason capitalized on a failed clearance by the Riders in the 62nd minute, Saari said. The Riders gave up the ball near the top of their 18-yard box and the Bulldogs centered it and finished it with a left-footed shot past Riders’ goalkeeper Logan Desser.
Defensive captain Sean Rankin finished his high school career with another strong performance on defense for the Roughriders, Saari said. Team captain Porter Litle also played his final game for Port Angeles.
“Josiah Long had a high work rate all game and had a couple of Port Angeles’ best scoring chances. Landon Close cleared the ball well and distributed it well at left back for Port Angeles,” Saari said.
The Riders finished with five shots to the Bulldogs’ 16. The Port Angeles JV won 3-0.
He said the Riders will return nine starters off this year young team, looking to build on their experience.
PA will return 9 starters next year and look to build on the experience that they gained in 2021.
Saari named Rankin and Close as his defensive players of the match and Long as his transition player of the match.
The program also loses senior managers in Natalie Martinson and Maizie Tucker.
