OLYMPIC LEAGUE TENNIS: Sequim, Port Angeles players advance to district tourney

BREMERTON — Sequim and Port Angeles tennis players are moving on to the district tournament after some stellar play at the Olympic League Championships at Olympic High School earlier this week.

Wolves exchange student Nico Zingaro of Italy reached the singles final but fell in straight sets 6-3, 6-3 to repeat champion Garrett Lawson of Bremerton.

Port Angeles freshman Reef Gelder earned the league’s fourth singles seed and the Roughriders also advanced the doubles duo of senior Milo Whitman and junior Wyatt Hall.

Whitman and Hall didn’t drop a set on their way to the title match against No. 1 seed Logan Chmielewski and Cole Walker of North Kitsap. Whitman and Hall took the undefeated Chmielewski and Walker to the brink, sending the match to a third set for the title, but ultimately dropped the final set 6-4.

Whitman and Hall qualified as the No. 2 seed and will face Pratt and Jewel of White River in the first round.

Gelder won his first two matches on Wednesday on his way to the semi-finals, but lost to Nico Zangaro of Sequim. That put Gelder in a winner to district-loser out match vs. Ryan Williams of North Kitsap.

Gelder was able to get the victory, 6-0, 6-1 to qualify as the 4th place finisher.

The West Central District 2A Tournament will be held at the Kitsap Tennis and Athletic Center in Bremerton on Friday and Saturday.
