PORT ANGELES — Port Angeles’ Millie Long capped off a successful high school basketball career by being named the Olympic League 2A girls basketball Most Valuable Player.
Long, who scored more than 1,000 points in her basketball career, despite missing some games as a sophomore with a broken finger and playing a truncated senior season due to the COVID-19 schedule, averaged about 18 points a game for the Riders.
She was also an outstanding defensive player, usually leading the team in steals, and helped lead her team to a perfect 15-0 record and Olympic League Tournament championship.
Long is a previous MVP winner in both basketball and soccer. She is also a state-champion hurdler, winning the girls 300 hurdles at the state 2A Track and Field meet in 2019. She is playing soccer and basketball for the Peninsula College Pirates next year.
Long has two teammates on the Olympic League first team. Joining her are Roughriders Eve Burke and Jaida Wood. Port Angeles head coach Michael Poindexter was named Coach of the Year.
Sequim lost only two games all season — both close games to Port Angeles — and finished second in the Olympic League. The Wolves’ Jayla Julmist, who averaged a double-double this season, made the first team. The Wolves placed three girls on the second team — Kalli Wiker, who set a Sequim record by making nine 3-pointers in a game, Melissa Porter and Jelissa Julmist.
Also making the first team was Mia McNair of North Kitsap. McNair started her high school career playing for Chimacum.
Making the All-League Sportsmanship Team was Camille Stensgard of Port Angeles and Hannah Bates of Sequim.
Boys team
The boys MVP was not a surprise — North Kitsap’s Jonas La Tour. Port Angeles got two boys on the first team — Wyatt Dunning and John Vaara. Two Riders made the second team, Dru Clark and Chase Cobb, while Sequim’s Erik Christiansen made the second team.
Named the boys Coach of the Year was Kasey Ulin, who led his team to the Olympic League championship game. One of the highlights of the Riders’ season was knocking off state champion North Kitsap.
Making the All-League Sportsmanship team was Christiansen and Cobb and East Jefferson’s Toby Fulton.
