POULSBO — Sequim wrested the Olympic League boys track and field crown away from defending champions North Kitsap on the Vikings home surface during the two-day Olympic League Track and Field Championships on Thursday and Saturday.
Port Angeles finished second in the girls portion of the league meet with 663 points to North Kitsap’s 700. Sophomore Lauren Larson swept the 800, 1,600 and 3,200-meter runs for the Roughriders.
Paced by five individual event winners, including senior long-distance runner Murray Bingham who swept the 800 and 1,600 meter runs, the Wolves boys also claimed the 4×400 relay and finished second in seven other individual events and the 4×100 relay.
Sequim totaled 543 team points to top North Kitsap (506) for the boys championship.
Junior Darren Salazar had an excellent meet, winning the 200 meter dash in 22.47 seconds, just ahead of teammate Logan Laxson who set a personal record in 23.09.
Salazar also was second in the 100 in 11.06, just two-hundredths of a second behind Olympic’s Adam Johnson.
Bingham took the 800 with a time of 1:57.02 and the 1,600 in 4:32.86.
Alex Shingleton ran to victory in the 400 for the Wolves with a time of 50.3 and set a season record with a runner-up finish to Bingham in the 800 in 1:58.89.
Salazar, Shingleton, Laxson and Bingham teamed to win the 4×400 relay in 3:27.15 for Sequim.
The Wolves’ Riley Cowan won the javelin with a throw of 167-08 and was runner-up in the shot put with a distance of 42-03.75.
Liam Byrne set a season-best by clearing 13 feet in the pole vault in another win for Sequim.
Port Angeles finished fourth in the boys standings with 299 points led by Liam Clark who won the high jump (6 feet) and triple jump (42-10.25) and posted 62 total points, best among all competitors.
Clark also finished second in the long jump (21 feet).
Port Angeles’ Grady Bourm was second in the high jump behind Clark (5-10).
Girls
In the girls meet, Larson set personal-record times of 2:21.66 to win the 800 and 11:17.05 in the 3,200 and won the 1,600 in 5:13.04 for Port Angeles.
Teammate Kynzie DeLeon finished second behind Larson in all three events.
Riders’ sophomore Millie Long won the 300 hurdles with a season-best time of 47.29, beating out teammate Delaney Wenzl (49.74). Long also was second in the 100 hurdles (15.69) and third in the long jump with a personal record of 16-06.
Port Angeles freshman Eve Burke (4-08) edged Sequim’s Abby Schroeder (4-08) for the high jump title.
Mckenzie Musalek cleared 10 feet to win the pole vault for the Riders.
Sequim freshman Riley Pyeatt picked up the Wolves’ girls lone individual event victory, running to a win in the 400 in 58.41. Pyeatt also finished fourth with a personal-record 200 time of 26.72.
