OLYMPIC 2A TRACK AND FIELD: Roughriders girls win league meet, Sequim boys second

BREMERTON — The Port Angeles girls, deep in the middle- and long-distance events, won the Olympic League 2A Subdistrict track and field meet, while the Sequim boys came in second.

The Roughrider girls ended up with 156 points to North Kitsap’s 131, while the North Kitsap boys outpointed the Sequim boys 168 to 118. North Kitsap and Sequim were the only two schools at the boys meet over 100 points.

The Port Angeles boys finished fourth with 64 points, while the Sequim girls finished seventh with 30 points.

The Rider girls won a total of seven events, including a clean sweep of the distance events. The Sequim boys won four events.

Gracie Long of Port Angeles won multiple events, the 1,600- and 3,200-meter runs. Her teammate, Maddie Dougherty, came in second in both events, finishing 1.11 seconds behind Long in the 3,200.

Gracie Long, Dougherty, Millie Long and Kynzie DeLeon were also part of the Riders’ first-place 4×400 relay team.

Sequim’s Murray Bingham also won two distance events, the 800- and the 1,600-meter runs. He beat his teammate Alec Shingleton by two seconds in the 800. Shingleton was also second in the 400 and Shingleton and Murray, along with Logan Laxson and Darren Salazar, were part of a second-place by the 4×400 relay team.

A surprise winner was Port Angeles’ Delaney Wenzl, who won the high jump at 5 feet, 1 inch, beating her teammate Gracie Long, who won the high jump seven times this season.

Sequim’s Riley Martin, who has the second-fastest 100-meter hurdle time in the state, returned from a back injury to win this event. Despite being out for a couple of weeks, Martin’s winning time of 15.39 seconds is just 0.25 of a second off his best time of the year.

• High Jump — Liam Clark, Port Angeles, 5-10.

Girls

• 800 meters — DeLeon, Port Angeles, 2:26.22.

• Pole Vault — Elizabeth Sweet, Sequim, 10-6.

• Triple Jump — Lainnie Lyamba, Port Angeles, 34.3.

• 300-meter hurdles — Millie Long, Port Angeles, 47.41.

Other strong performances include Sequim’s Fisher Jensen, who came in second in the 300-meter hurdles and third in the 100-meter hurdles. Port Angeles’ Javen Weller had a personal-best (by seven feet) in the javelin, finishing second. Sequim’s Shayli Schuman was second in the 300-meter hurdles. Sequim’s Liam Byrne was second in the high jump, while the Riders girls’ 4×200 team (Emma Albright, Millie Long, Wenzl and McKenzie Musalek) was second. Port Angeles’ Lyamba was second in the long jump.

The top five in each event now move on to the West Central District 3 2A meet Friday and Saturday at Renton Stadium. Sequim qualified for 20 slots at districts while Port Angeles qualified for 30.
