PORT ANGELES — More than 500 racers from all around the Pacific Northwest and Canada, including more than 50 professional riders, took on Dry Hill this weekend in the second round of the Northwest Cup.
Dry Hill is hosting three races this season. The first took place in April and the NW Cup finals will be held outside of Port Angeles on Sept. 6-8.
Dry Hill features downhill racing on various courses for beginners, intermediate riders, experts and professionals. It’s one of the most popular courses in the NW Cup series and hosts at least a couple of races each year. Racers competed from Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, Utah, Colorado, Nevada, California, British Columbia, Alberta and Yukon. Races went on for three days with the finals Sunday.

There were a pair of solid showings by Port Angeles riders in Cat 2 (intermediate) races. Christian Goodwin of Port Angeles, sponsored by Addictive Adventure Racks, finished second in the Cat 2 30-39 division with a time of 2 minutes, 54.88 seconds. There were 14 riders in Goodwin’s category.
Ezra Northern, a longtime veteran of the NW Cup series and sponsored by Olympic Dirt Society, finished fifth in the Cat 2 19-29 race in a time of 2:49.39. In the same race, Sam Stevenson of Port Angeles, sponsored by Bike Garage, was 14th in a time of 3:02.49. There were 25 racers in this category.
Ronan McGuire of Port Angeles (Sound Bikes and Kayaks), racing in the boys 15-16 Cat 2 race, also finished fifth in a time of 2:47.18. There were 28 racers in his category.
Ethan Barbre of Port Angeles was 13th out of 22 racers in the Cat 2 boys 13-14 category with a time of 3:00.99.
A pair of local riders competed in the difficult expert category. James Gardner was ninth in the Cat 1 men’s 30-39 race in a time of 2:48.86 and Oscar Ruiz (Samox) was 11th in the Cat 1 men’s 19-29 race in a time of 2:46.65.
The men and women’s pro races were both won by Canadians.
Taking first for the pro women was Bailey Goldstone of Squamish, B.C., in a time of 2:45.65. She also won at Dry Hill in April.
Second was Julia Lofqvist Traum (Sweetlines Racing) of Issaquah in a time of 2:50.02 and third was Sydney Haberman (Sweetlines Elite Racing/Norco) of Redmond in a time of 2:51.13. Haberman was second at Dry Hill in April.
The men’s pro race was incredibly close. First for the pro men was Henry Sherry (Corsa Cycles/Dunbar Cycles) of Victoria, B.C., in a time of 2:22.46, shaving nine seconds off his time from when he raced at Dry Hill in April.
Second was Bode Burke (Outlaw United Maxxis Crankbothers) of Rhododendron, Ore., in a time of 2:22.52, just 0.06 of a second behind. Third was Zac Stratton of Pemberton, B.C., in a time of 2:23.09.
The next NW Cup downhill race will be held at Tamarack Bike Park in Donnelly, Idaho, on June 21-23. There are also races scheduled at Whitefish, Mont., on June 28-30, Silver Mountain Bike Park in Kellogg, Idaho, on Aug. 2-4 and Snoqualmie Bike Park in Snoqualmie on Aug. 9-11.
