MOUNTAIN BIKING: Port Angeles duo wins again at NW Cup

DONNELLY, Idaho — Port Angeles’ Mathew Mangano and James Gardner won their divisions for the second straight race in the Northwest Cup downhill mountain biking races held at Tamarack Ski Area in Donnelly, Idaho, this weekend.

Mangano, who is just 15, took first place in the men’s 15-19 Cat 2 division with a time of 3 minutes, 45 seconds. Gardner won in the men’s 30-39 Cat 2 division in dominating fashion with a time of 4:14.57, more than 20 seconds fast than the second-place rider in his division.

Mangano and Gardner also both won in their divisions at the previous NW Cup race held at Stevens Pass July 13-15. Mangano has also picked up two second-place finishes earlier this year, both at NW Cup races held at Dry Hill outside of Port Angeles.

Other Port Angeles riders who placed at Tamarack include:

• Boys 0-10 Cat 3 — Anthony Jones, sixth, 6:27.31

• Boys 11-14 Cat 3 — Joseph Ritchie, eighth, 6:12.19; Cash Coleman, 13th, 6:27.76.

• Men’s 15-18 Cat 2 — Talon Northern, 11th, 4:13.74.

• Boy’s 0-18 Cat 1 — Ezra Northern, 15th, 3:41.18.

The NW Cup is a series of eight downhill mountain biking races held in Washington, Oregon, Idaho and Montana that features hundreds of mountain bike riders from across the western U.S. and Canada. The next races will be held at Whitefish, Mont., on Aug. 24-26.
