STEVENS PASS — Port Angeles’ Steven Johnson won the Cat 3 Men’s 60-plus division at the fifth stop of the Northwest Cup downhill mountain biking championships held at Stevens Pass this weekend.
Johnson won with a time of 5 minutes, 3.89 seconds.
A total of 19 Olympic Peninsula riders competed at Stevens Pass, with several others placing high in the rankings.
Travis Bear of Sequim came in second in the Cat 3 Men’s 40-59 division with a time of 4:51.73, less than two seconds off the top time.
Bear is actually leading his division after five Northwest Cup races. He has two third-place finishes, two second-place finishes and a first (at Mount Hood, Ore., on May 26).
Cat 3 is a novice division, while Cat 2 is experienced and Cat 1 is expert. There is a also a pro division, but no North Olympic Peninsula riders ride as pros.
Talon Northern finished third in the Cat 2 Men’s 15-18 division with a time of 3:13.23. Northern is second overall this season in this division with a first-place finish (at Port Angeles), a second place and two third places.
Bryan Campbell of Port Angeles finished third in the Cat 2 Men’s 20-30 division with a time of 3:21.59. His Stevens Pass finish leaves him at third place in the overall standings. He had a first-place finish at Port Angeles on May 5.
Mathew Mangano finished fourth in the very difficult Cat 1 Men’s 0-18 division with a time of 2:28.62.
Mangano’s Stevens Pass finish was his best of the season and he is in a very solid third place overall in the Cat 1 0-18 Men’s overall standings.
Bryan Campbell of Port Angeles finished third in the Cat 2 Men’s 30-39 division with a time of 2:21.59. Campbell is second overall in his division with a first-place finish May 5 in Port Angeles.
Anthony Jones of Port Angeles finished fourth in the Cat 3 Boy’s 11-14 division with a time of 4:53.80, while Joseph Ritchie of Port Angeles was sixth in the same division with a time of 4:56.12.
Other local riders doing well in the overall standings include James Alton, who is fifth in the Cat 2 40-49 Men’s division. He didn’t race at Stevens Pass, but has a first-place finish in Port Angeles.
Will Stevenson is sixth overall in the Cat 2 50-plus Men’s division. He also did not race at Stevens Pass.
Zach Fraser, who didn’t race at Stevens Pass, is eighth overall in the Cat 2 19-29 Men’s division. Alton, Stevenson and Fraser all members of the local Olympic Dirt Society club.
