MOUNTAIN BIKING: Group heading North Olympic team to meet

PORT ANGELES — With a wildly successful BMX track in Port Angeles, a world-class downhill track and a new layout for mountain biking novices in the area, cycling is a growing and thriving sport on the North Olympic Peninsula.

The Clallam County 4H Club and local mountain biking enthusiasts are looking to turn the local growth in the sport into a thriving and competitive youth team.

Middle and high school kids in the Port Angeles, Sequim and Joyce areas are invited to come to a North Olympic Mountain Bike Team informational meeting Saturday, Sept. 28 to talk about forming this year’s team.

The meeting will be held at 1 p.m. at the Carver Room of the Port Angeles Public Library at 2210 S. Peabody Street.

This will be the second year for the team, said organizer Tom Kendall. Last year, the North Olympic squad had nine kids. Kendall said organizers are hoping to get as many as 15 to 20 kids on the team this time around.

No experience is needed to join the squad, which will be for youths from grades 4 through 12.

The team’s first competition will be at a BuDu West Side Series Race on Oct. 1.

For additional information, contact Kendall at 612-929-9200 or at northolympicmtb@gmail.com.
