THE WASHINGTON STATE Golf Association has selected Sequim’s Cedars at Dungeness Golf Course as one of four host sites for the third annual Winter Tournament Series.
Designed to offer association members a chance to compete during the winter months, the series will vary the tournament format at each stop.
It kicks off with a Stableford tournament at Bellevue Municipal Golf Course on Friday, Jan. 22.
A month later, Lakewood’s Oakbrook Golf and Country Club will host a two-person scramble on Feb. 22.
Cedars steps up to host a stroke-play tournament on March 26, and the series concludes with a two-person best ball tournament at Apple Tree Golf Course in Yakima on April 9.

Winter Scramble
Sequim’s SkyRidge Golf Course’s three-person scramble tournament is set for a 9:30 a.m. tee-off Saturday.
Closest to the pin (KP) prizes, range balls and inclusion into a honey pot are available for $150 per team.
Each team must have a total combined handicap of 15 or greater. Twenty percent of team total handicap will be used.

Arctic Tourney on tap
Port Townsend Golf Club is gearing up for the 24th annual Arctic Open sponsored by Marine View Beverages.
The 36-hole, best-ball event is set for Saturday, Feb. 13 and Sunday, Feb. 14.
Get your entries in early as demand is strong for the “biggest tournament of the year,” according to assistant pro Gabe Tonan.
Entrants should be prepared for any and all forms of weather.

Scholarship available
Maybe things have changed in the 10 years I have been out of high school.
SAT scores and the mean grade-point average of incoming college freshmen have risen in that time frame, so its entirely possible that current high school juniors are fretting about finances for their college career.
The Western Golf Association’s Evans Golf Scholarship Program begins in the summer after a potential applicant’s junior year of high school.
It’s an involved process and not for the faint of heart or those afraid of public speaking.
Sequim High School graduates Elsey G. Perkins and Wade Miller each earned the prestigious scholarship in recent years and are attending the University of Washington.
The scholarship is a one-year grant that covers tuition and housing (when applicable) and may be renewed for up to four years.
All recipients of Evans Scholarships are required to live on the campus of the university they attend.
PGA Tour begins
Geoff Ogilvy came from behind to claim his second-straight SBS Tournament Championship as the PGA Tour kicked off the 2010 season at Kapalua Resort in Hawaii.
Ogilvy shot 22 under par for the week, and everyone in the winners-only field broke par at the tournament.
I’m at a bit of a crossroads with the results. Sometimes I enjoy seeing players dominate the course and other times I like to see how players play courses with rough conditions.
Right now though, I’m just happy to see some palm tree-lined fairways.
