MICHAEL CARMAN’S GOLF COLUMN: Benefit tournament set in Sequim

MY MUSICAL TASTES run more Rolling Stones than The Beatles but sometimes in life challenges arise and “We all need a little help from our friends.”

Right now, a local family needs our help and a round of golf can provide some assistance.

Crescent High School senior Jonathon Petroff, 17, has been diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma, a cancer that originates in your body’s lymphocytes, a type of white blood cell.

Medical treatment is available for this disease but it and all related costs are expensive.

To help out, Julie Ralston and her father, Steve Nichols, have planned The Cornucopia Golf Benefit at SkyRidge Golf Course in Sequim on Sunday, Nov. 6.

The four-person scramble will tee off at 9:30 a.m.

Cost is $160 per team with an optional $20 honey pot.

Carts are $12 per seat.

Proceeds from the event will go to the Petroff family.

So come out and play and help Jonathon out. You should be extra rested since the clocks fall back an hour at 2 a.m. that Sunday morning.

Jonathon plans to join the Coast Guard or Air Force after graduating in June, so let’s give him a boost before he serves all of us.

To play in the event, phone SkyRidge at 360-683-3673.

Match play champion

It took all summer but Port Townsend Golf Club finally has a winner for the Men’s Club Match Play Championship golf tournament.

Dan Adams claimed the crown after besting Woody Woodley in a tough 2-up championship match. There was a field of 32 players in a great double-elimination format.

Adams joins PTGC men’s gross champion Chris Holloway and net champion Joe Ruby, winners of their titles during a 36-hole event in August.

Last major of the year

I always like writing about “the last major of the year,” which is the annual Hilltop Tavern Open Golf Tournament, set this year for Saturday, Nov. 5 at Port Townsend Golf Club.

Maybe it’s because I was a big fan of a certain cartoon cat with a fondness for lasagna, and players in this tourney get to enjoy Hilltop owner Judy Lundgren’s world-famous lasagna at the post-round awards ceremony.

The tournament format is a two-person scramble (men and women welcome).

Players will also compete for a hole-in-one prize courtesy of Gary’s Auto.

Phone the club for details at 360-385-4547.

Winter rates

Port Townsend also has switched to its winter rates.

Players can golf nine holes for $13 and 18 holes for $17. Less than $1 a hole to play? That’s a solid deal right there.

Changes at Chambers

United States Golf Association-mandated renovations are underway at Chambers Bay in University Place, the host site of the 2015 U.S. Open.

The first project, leveling an area short-right of the first green is underway.

Players will golf the No. 10 hole twice for about six weeks.

The other changes are detailed at http://tinyurl.com/ChambersChanges.

Players can play Chambers for regular price and then receive a discount for a $50 round Monday through Friday until March 31.

The changes are nowhere near as large in scope as USGA-mandated renovations at former U.S. Open sites like Bethpage Black or Torrey Pines South.

Evans Cup auction

An online auction benefitting the Evans Cup, a scholarship program for school-age golf caddies, is available at http://tinyurl.com/EvansAuction.

Lots of golf packages are available plus trips to Woodland Park and Point Defiance zoos, wine, golf equipment and sports memorabilia.

Applications for the 2011 Chick Evans Caddie Scholarships are available at http://tinyurl.com/EvansScholarship.
