BELLINGHAM — The Peninsula College men shot a blistering 60 percent from the field in an 81-71 NWAC North Division road victory Wednesday.
“We got the shots that we wanted,” coach Donald Rollman said. “Whatcom was really aggressive defensively. We fought hard, didn’t shy away from contact, put pressure on them to defend and had them twisting and turning.
“We were super efficient.”
Ty Artis played the entire game for the Pirates, putting up 19 points, eight assists and six rebounds.
“I can’t take him off the floor,” Rollman said. “He so good for us defensively. He defends the opponent’s best player every night, and he held [Whatcom’s] Caleb Smith down last night.”
Jaylin Reed also had his best shooting night of the season, going 8 for 13, with 20 points, five rebounds and three assists.
“To see a guy as good as Jaylin just take a deep breath and play was great to see,” Rollman said.
“This week we focused more on us and what we needed to do. I think that helped us execute and have more of a sense of buy-in.”
Rollman also said reserves Isaac Garcia and Vince McFarland played roles in the win.
Garcia scored seven points, dished out five assists and added a pair of rebounds, while McFarland scored 10 points and added three rebounds.
“Isaac defended well and kept it simple,” Rollman said. “Isaac was important for us last night, and Vince had a couple of putbacks and did a great job on the glass.”
Peninsula (2-3) hosts Skagit Valley (5-0) at 4 p.m. Saturday.
No fan attendance will be allowed.
