MEN’S BASKETBALL: Peninsula College falls in OT thriller to Bellevue

PORT ANGELES — Peninsula College sent its NWAC North Division men’s basketball game to overtime with a late Antonio Odum layup, but it couldn’t come through in the extra period, falling 75-74 to Bellevue at home on Wednesday.

Trailing by one with 10 seconds to play in the OT period, Pirates point guard Isaiah Lopez took the inbounds pass up court, trying to find an open teammate for a last-second shot. Swarmed by the Bellevue defense, Lopez put up a long two-point jumper that hit front iron at the buzzer.

Peninsula led by as much as 10 points (44-34) after a Lopez bucket with 16:34 to play, but a 14-4 Bulldogs’ run had Bellevue within striking distance.

Bellevue took its first lead of the second half at 54-53 with 5:45 left to play and the teams swapped leads back and forth down the stretch.

Sawyer Cottrell drained an open trey with 9.6 seconds left to put Bellevue up 65-63 and, after a timeout, Peninsula’s Jaiden Blackmon drew a double team at the free-throw line elbow and hit Odum with a bounce pass for the tying layup.

Odum later hit two free throws with 21.6 seconds left to make it 75-74 and the Pirates (5-5, 11-13) got the defensive stop they needed before Lopez’s potential game-winner missed the mark.
