LOCAL SPORTS: Wintry weather prompts prep cancellations; Thursday games on

PORT ANGELES — A winter storm that featured both snow and freezing rain canceled prep sports on the Olympic Peninsula on Tuesday.

Schools around the Olympic Peninsula canceled events due to forecasts of ice and freezing rain.

Sporting events in Port Angeles, Sequim and Joyce were canceled Wednesday night due to snow in the morning and early afternoon.

As of press deadline, Peninsula College was scheduled to host men’s and women’s basketball games against Bellevue Wednesday evening.

As of press deadline, sporting events today and Friday are on, including a Port Angeles girls home basketball game at 7 p.m. today against North Mason.

Mariners add reliever

SEATTLE — The Seattle Mariners added to their bullpen Wednesday by agreeing to a $1.25 million, one-year contract with right-hander Austin Voth.

Voth, 31, made 25 relief appearances last season for Baltimore after spending the majority of the 2022 season as a starter. Voth was 1-2 with a 5.19 ERA for the Orioles in 2023.

In 2022, Voth started the season as a reliever for the Nationals before being traded to Baltimore.

Following the trade, Voth pitched in 22 games with 17 starts and was 5-4 with a 3.04 ERA.

Voth missed more than two months last season with an elbow injury and ended the season pitching in Triple-A.

The signing was a homecoming for Voth, who grew up in the Seattle area and played three seasons in college at Washington before beginning his pro career as a fifth-round pick of the Nationals in 2013.
