COPENHAGEN, Denmark — Five Lincoln Park BMX riders competed in the UCI BMX Racing World Championships during this past week, with some of the riders placing high up in the overall standings, but one unfortunately sustaining a serious injury.
More than 3,200 riders from more than 40 countries competed in the BMX Worlds.
Port Angeles’ Teyah Elofson-Cross and Kylin Weitz were among the two Lincoln Park BMX riders to compete.
Weitz had the roughest outing. On July 28, in the 12 and under girls cruiser class, she finished 16th out of 28 riders. She won her first and second motos and came in second in her third moto.
In the semifinals, she was bumped by another rider on a curve and crashed hard on the track and suffered a fracture in her foot. She was set to race July 30 but was knocked out for the rest of the Worlds.
Elofson-Cross finished 19th out of 51 riders in the girls 13-16 cruiser class, making it to the quarterfinals. She finished third, fifth, sixth and fifth in her motos. On July 30, Elofson-Cross raced in the girls 13 class, again making it to the quarterfinals and finishing 21st out of 72 riders. She had a fourth-, third-, fifth- and fifth-place finish in her four motos.
On July 29, Warren Christensen of Kingston/Lincoln Park BMX finished 67th out of 131 riders in the boys 9 class with third-, fifth-, second- and seventh-place finishes. Elinor Christensen, also of Kingston/Lincoln Park BMX came in 15th out of 77 riders in the girls 11 class, making it to the semifinals. She has finishes of third, second, first, third, third and eighth in her motos.
Wyatt Christensen of Kingston/Lincoln Park BMX went into Worlds as a defending world champion. He finished 12th out of 173 riders this year in the boys 13 class, crashing during the semifinals. He was doing well until the semis with moto finishes of five straight first-place finishes, a third and finally, sixth.
“[The] racing was tough. Very wet and riders from Europe and Asia ride much differently than in the U.S. [It] rained off and during racing,” said Lincoln Park BMX operator Sean Coleman.
Though they are not Lincoln Park BMX riders, two other western Washington riders did very well at Worlds. Tenisyn McKee of Buckley successfully defended her No. 1 ranking by finishing first in the girls 9 class. Irelyn McGinley of Bremerton finished seventh overall in the girls 9 class.
