PORT ANGELES — The Wilder Baseball team got off to a hot start for its 2018 season, getting both good hitting and good pitching while sweeping a pair from Northwest Blaze 12-1 and 10-3.
“Today was a great day for the … club, getting two wins against a quality non league opponent. It’s tough early on in the summer to get a bunch of guys from different schools on the same page but I felt like today we did a great job communicating on the field and executing both offensively and defensively,” said coach Karl Myers.
Wilder consists of players from the Port Angeles, Sequim, Chimacum and Port Townsend high school teams.
“Pitching was great all day long, most guys haven’t thrown in two to three weeks so it is natural to show a little rust. I thought our guys did a great job attacking with multiple pitches and using the defense. Brody Merritt, Ian Miller, Brady Shimko and Hayden Woods were all exceptional, it will be fun to see this staff work as a group and compete,” Myers said.
Myers also said Joel Wood played great behind the plate, keeping runners on base close and handling the Wilder staff that gave up just four runs in Sunday’s two games.
In game one, Miller picked up the win, going three innings and giving up just two hits while walking none. Woods pitched the final two innings, giving up no hits. Merritt won game two.
Ethan Flodstrom had a double and two RBIs, while Miller was 2 for 3 with an RBI and a run. Carson Jackson was 1 for 2 with two RBIs, three runs scored, a walk and a stolen base. Milo Whitman also had two RBIs, while Tyler Bowen was 1 for 1 with two runs scored, an RBI and two stolen bases.
Wilder returns to play next weekend with two nonleague doubleheaders against Mudville and Toyota Baseball Club.

Wilder Jr. splits two
Wilder Jr. split a pair of games and Lakeside AA on Sunday. Wilder beat Lakeside 9-8 in the early game and came from way behind in the late game, but fell in the end 14-11.
In game one, Lucas Jarnigan had a triple and an RBI, while Michael Grubb was 2 for 3 with two runs scored and an RBI. Timmy Adams had a hit, two walks, a run scored and an RBI and Landon Seibel had a hit, a run scored and an RBI.
On the mound, Tate Gahimer picked up the win, going 3 1/3 innings, and giving up just one hit and one walk while striking out five.
In the second game, Wilder Jr. fell behind 12-2 after four innings, but scored three runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings to make a game of it.
Wilder Jr. used eight pitchers in the game. Mason Nickovich, Seth Woods and Adam Watkins all pitched scoreless innings.
At the plate, a number of kids had huge games. Jarnigan was 2 for 3 with a home run, two runs scored and three RBIs, Adams was 2 for 4 with a double and a triple, two runs scored and an RBI; Watkins was 2 for 4 with a double, a run and three RBIs.
