Five-run 1st frame dooms PA in cross-Strait rivalry
VICTORIA — A five-run first inning did in Port Angeles in an 11-3 loss to the Victoria HarbourCats at Wilson’s Group Stadium on Wednesday evening.
The Lefties opened the game in solid fashion, as leadoff hitter Jeremy Giesegh reached base with a single, moved to second on a wild pitch and was driven in on Roberto Nunez’s RBI double.
Giesegh is hitting .385 with three home runs and 18 RBIs in West Coast League play this summer.
The WCL Player of the Week, Giesegh also was recognized for his emergence as one of the WCL’s most productive hitters by Commissioner Rob Neyer as part of the league’s WCL Spotlight series on 2024 players.
Port Angeles starter Jackson Price was tagged with five runs, three earned, on five hits and a walk with three strikeouts in his four innings to take the loss.
Nunez singled and scored on a two-base throwing error to cut the score to 5-2 after three innings.
Victoria added three more runs in the fifth to regain total control.
Giesegh singled, advanced to second on a Nunez single and scored on a Jason Leon RBI single to make it 8-3, but that’s all the offense Port Angeles (4-15) could provide.
The Lefties continue their series with the HarbourCats tonight and Saturday.
