PORT ANGELES — Despite a number of strong individual performances this summer, Port Angeles was limited to one second-team selection along with a handful of honorable mention honors, as the 2022 All-West Coast League teams were announced Thursday by Commissioner Rob Neyer.
“It’s a true pleasure to watch the West Coast League’s tremendous players all summer,” Neyer said, “and I certainly don’t envy our coaches who somehow winnowed down all that talent to just the players on these all-league teams.”
Lefties reliever Andrew Hauck earned the second-team nod. Hauck led Port Angeles and was second in the league in wins (5-2). Hauck tossed 44 innings across 14 games, compiling a 4.50 ERA with a team-high three saves in relief.
Earning honorable mention for Port Angeles were infielders Riley Parker and B.Y. Choi and pitchers Liam Paddack, Trey Maeker and John Pfeffer.
Parker put together an all-star-caliber summer for the Lefties, hitting .318, including two home runs, 11 doubles and 36 RBIs, good for fifth overall in the WCL.
“I expected Riley Parker to be good, I didn’t expect that,” Acker said of the former Bellingham Bell. “He had an ax to grind. He had something to prove.”
Paddack, a sophomore at Spokane Falls Community College, led the West Coast League in strikeouts with 50 in just 36 innings pitched. Paddack had an ERA of 2.50 and went 2-1 on the season.
Maeker (Fordham) was seventh in the league in strikeouts, even though he was used primarily as a reliever and pitched just 28â…” innings. He racked up 43 strikeouts, went 3-0 with two saves and had an ERA of 2.51.
Pfeffer (Cal State, San Bernardino) was solid out of the bullpen, going 1-1 with an ERA of 2.31 and 38 strikeouts (12th in the WCL) in 35 innings.
Wednesday, the MVP and Pitcher of the Year Awards were unveiled, as Wenatchee AppleSox second baseman Joichiro Oyama (UC Irvine) and Ridgefield Raptors outfielder/catcher Jacob Sharp (UNLV) were selected by WCL coaches and executives as co-MVPs, while Bellingham hurler Trevin Hope captured pitching honors.
On the All-WCL first team, the Bend Elks lead the way with three selections, followed by the Bellingham Bells, Corvallis Knights, Cowlitz Black Bears, Portland Pickles, and Ridgefield Raptors with two each.
